This Tree of Life Jacobean crewel design, of Canada’s provincial flowers was originally created by Fran Oakley, and donated as a fundraiser for the first EAC Seminar in 1975. For a cost of $2.10 you received the instructions and list of colours, and an iron-on pattern ... mailed straight to your door!
To commemorate the Embroiderers’ Association of Canada’s 40th anniversary, the Winnipeg Embroiderers’ Guild chose to revive this work and provide it as a gift to the attendees of Seminar 2013. To help keep seminar costs down, and reduce paper waste, we opted to put the pattern package online where it can be downloaded by the stitchers who truly want to recreate this. Marjorie Mitchell, an early member of WEG, gifted an original copy of the transfer, instructions, a piece of woollen twill, and Appleton yarns to Kathy Smith. Sandra Toyne revised the design to include the flowers of the territories, and both versions were scanned to digital format. Elizabeth Bonnett redrew the scanned patterns using drawing software to clean up the lines, and created letter-size sections for ease of printing. A small group of stitchers took on the task of creating stitched pieces of both of these versions to be displayed at Seminar Central.
